Billions lost
Dharshie Wissah from Kakamega in Kenya took this picture and won the 2019 CIWEM environmental photographer of the year prize (category: water, equality and sustainability).
It is a shocking image for most people around the world.
The picture shows a young boy drinking dirty water due to the lack of water points in the area caused by deforestation. Lack of clean water greatly increases the risk of diarrhoeal diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever and dysentery, and other water-borne tropical diseases.
This picture is all the more shocking when reading almost daily about the billions and billions still being invested in massively destructive weapons.
Most rich countries around the world spend massive amounts on weapons. Artificial intelligence will most probably make them even more destructive.
Most rich countries around the world spend less than 0.5 % of their GDP on helping to combat poverty in poorer countries. Poverty that has often been caused by the very policies imposed by the richer countries – in the past and still today. Poverty causing suffering and partly explaining the need for people in poorer countries to migrate to the richer ones.
Closing borders and building walls… Definitely not a solution! Honest development and educational aid, political correctness, openness and dialogue are some of the areas to be invested in to solve issues like poverty and related ones.
May Dharshie Wissah’s picture make our leaders aware that they are on the wrong train – a train heading towards a ravine.
